Salem Witch Trials


1.    List at least 4 things that the Puritans believed about life and religion.
1.)               The only head of the church in heaven or church is Christ.
2.)               Man only existed for the glory of God.
3.)               Puritans did not celebrate traditional holidays such as Christmas because they thought it was a violation of the regulatory principles.
4.)               No pope or bishop could impose laws on Christians without their consent.

3.  Who is Arthur Miller?  What famous play did he write about the Salem Witch Trials?
1.)   Arthur Miller was a famous American playwright and essayist. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Prince of Asturias Award, and was also married to the very famous, Marilyn Monroe. The famous playwright Arthur Miller wrote was called The Crucible.

4.  Name an event in American history that exhibited some of the same "mob" and "paranoia" as the Salem Witch Trials.
1.) The Red scare of the 1950’s was caused by a fear of communism overtaking     
America. The scare was fuel by one man, U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy. He targeted
any person who spoke out against the government; he accused many entertainers
and writers of being communists.

5.  Name and describe a person who was killed after being found guilty of being a witch.  Also, name and describe a person who was a judge, an accuser, or who was found innocent.
1.) Sarah Good was accused by four women of being a witch. She was a homeless woman and people described her as being filthy, bad-tempered, and detached from the rest of the village. On July 19, 1692, Sarah was hanged.
2.) Ann Putnam Jr. was one of the accusers in the Salem Witch Trials. Many say that her parents are the ones who forced her to say the things she did about her friends being witches.
